Karlos says: So, like, all program staff at CMJ have weekly media monitoring duties. Some of us read the NY Times, the SF Chronicle, Google News, and thousands of blogs (RSS Feeds, Nexis Lexis, et al), while others watch local TV news, network cable and listen to the radio. We monitor media policy news, racial and gender justice news, youth and immigrant rights news, hip hop and pop culture, housing and displacement news, strategic communications and public opinion and much, much more. Some is local, some is national, and some is, well, global.
Every Tuesday and Thursday mornings, we have meetings to discuss what we're all seeing, reading and listening to - and we've come up with a way to share some of the analysis and links to important news. (You notice that "news" bar to the right of the page?)
So (almost) every Tuesday and Thursday we're giving out futbol (soccer) themed media penalties to all those media makers and movers and shakers out there who dare to continue to marginalize voices, perspectives and issues important to our communities. (Or just say something racist, sexist or just plain stupid.) And we're also gonna' give a few "free kicks" as props to those that shed light on justice and the conversations taking place on kitchen tables, street corners and in organized communities and community organizations.
We promise in the future there'll be more than links... And send us those stories you think are deserving!
