Michele Gutierrez

Grassroots Media Activism Coordinator


Michele Gutierrez is a Filipina born and raised in Long Beach, California. She has been involved in social change work since high school in issues ranging from educational access to reproductive justice. Before coming to YMC, Michele served as a program coordinator at Khmer Girls in Action (KGA), facilitating leadership development among Southeast Asian young womyn, and leading KGA's creative writing & performance project as well as its digital storytelling & media justice program. Michele also served as KGA's board representative with Southern Californians for Youth Network (SC4Y). Through UCLA's Center for Ethno-Communications she produced "Broken Promises," a documentary that expands on the lives and struggles of Filipino WWII veterans denied benefits and equity by the United States government. The film has been used as an organizing tool to further the grassroots Equity Campaign.

Michele received BA degrees in Asian American Studies and International Development from UCLA in 2003.
